2006 marks the 60th anniversary of the foundation of UNICEF [United Nations Children’s Fund]. This organisation was established in December 1946 in the wake of World War II to support children in Europe and China. Its mandate has since been changed to address the long term needs of children and their mothers in developing countries everywhere.

Today UNICEF is the largest non-governmental organisation in the world working specifically for children. It has a presence in over 150 countries where it works with governments and local agencies to “make the world a better place for children”.

It does this by initiating long term development programmes in healthcare and education as well as by providing emergency aid in times of crisis. UNICEF’s slogan – Health, Education, Equality and Protection summarises its aims for all the children of the world. These are basic rights that should be taken for granted. UNICEF works to make these rights a reality by initiatives which range from providing adequate nutrition, safe water and sanitation to supporting birth registration campaigns and immunisation programmes to working with governments to develop education policies.

More than 2 million children die each year from vaccine preventable diseases. UNICEF is a global leader in vaccine supply, reaching 40% of the world’s children. The organisation is able to promote other health initiatives at immunisation sessions eg provision of Vitamin A supplements and insecticide treated mosquito nets.

Ethiopia remains one of Africa’s poorest countries with a population of 77.4 million - women and children below the age of 15 making up three quarters of this. Immunisation against vaccine preventable diseases is one of the major goals of the Ethiopian government’s health programme.

UNICEF receives no funding from the United Nations. It is supported entirely by voluntary contributions from governments, donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and other organisations.
